The DT Swiss FR 1500 Classic is the benchmark for gravity-focused aluminium wheelsets. Replacing the legendary FR 1950, this wheelset was developed alongside top-tier DH teams to be lighter than its predecessor while increasing impact resistance.

It is the definitive "fit and forget" wheelset for downhill racing, freeride, and heavy-duty bike park abuse, designed to survive the most brutal rock gardens on the World Cup circuit.

The FR 1500 utilizes a completely redesigned rim profile made from high-strength 6069 aluminium. By optimising the wall thickness—adding material to the bead hooks to prevent pinch flats and thinning it where stress is lower—DT Swiss has created a rim that is significantly more resilient to "flat spots" than previous generations.

The DT 240 Heart

At the centre of the FR 1500 is the DT Swiss 240 hub. Known for its tool-free maintenance and legendary reliability, the 240 in this wheelset is configured for the highest possible durability. It features the Ratchet EXP system, which uses fewer moving parts than traditional pawl hubs, resulting in a lighter and more robust drive unit that can handle the massive torque of modern DH drivetrains.

Performance Insight: Alloy vs. Carbon for DH

When choosing the FR 1500 over a carbon equivalent:

  • Impact Management: While carbon rims are stiffer, the FR 1500's 6069 alloy rim is designed to "give" slightly under extreme impacts. This often results in a dent (which can sometimes be straightened) rather than a crack, allowing you to finish your race run or bike park day.

  • Ride Feel: Professional DH riders often prefer the "damped" feel of aluminium wheels like the FR 1500, as they transmit less high-frequency vibration to the hands than ultra-stiff carbon wheels.

  • Maintenance: With standard J-bend spokes and the DT 240 hub, these wheels can be repaired at any bike shop in the world—essential for racing trips or alpine holidays.
