It's arrived... and yes wow didn't Evil make us wait! Good things come to those who wait though! The new 2021 Evil Following 121 has landed and for us UK trail riders... it ticks all the boxes!
The Mk1 Evil Following was without a doubt one of the first bikes alongside Santa Cruz's High Tower Lt, that made big wheel bikes cool.
You probably recall every MTB forum going mad over it, raving about how it handled, watching riders nail this bike over everything from Downhill races and dirt jumps to trails. It's fair to say the first-gen Evil Following co-started an entire genre of bikes, so having raised the bar that high first time have they managed to repeat the same feat?
The new Following 2020 has been designed for the modern rider, a bike to take on that all-day challenge. Evil has kept with the modern geo they helped instigate by steepening the seat angle to 77-degree angle for a forward, over the pedals, aggressive climbing position. To keep with its all-good, all-day, terrain-decimating demeanour they have not only kept it lightweight and efficient overall, but have also kept its suspension lively. Equipped with either RockShox Deluxe Ultimate DebonAir or Fox Float DPS Factory EVOL trunnion inline shocks it is sure to deliver the goods with ''an even rampier feel''.
Feel free to drop the svelte carbon chainring to run just the narrow/wide ring setup to save preciousgrams if you wish.
Here Evil has gone with a 460mm (size medium) reach so as not to lose its instinctive, seek-and-destroy feel. Contrary to the masses, they have kept the wheelbase toss-able. With a 1,177mm wheelbase for a medium it might sound sprawling, but Evil has said it’s the sweet spot—speed is your friend without having to spend time changing lines.
It's great to see Evil is sticking with a proven, Evil-approved threaded BB, and... they've added noise-cancelling rubber 'Sound Mounds' to the chainstay for serene shredding enjoyment.
One thing you’ll notice is the 51mm offset fork spec—that’s how the kits arrive, but the Following is designed to accept either a 42/44mm reduced offset fork, or the traditional 51mm.
To keep things tight and snappy, Evil has designed this frame around SuperBoost+/157mm rear-end spacing. Go ahead, roll your eyes, but Evil said:
"it’s warranted—we tested prototypes thoroughly. It is stiffer, it allowed us to rework our pivots, and it kept our chainstays at 430mm".
Running a 120mm rear and 120/130mm front with 29'er wheels makes for the perfect balance - lightweight, fast and very capable. Dual-row, angular-contact, Klüberplex-filled bearings + oversized pivot hardware make the rear glide over everything while being stiff enough to ensure power is still transferred to the rear wheel.
Two Spec levels are available initially Sram GX Eagle and Shimano XT. Both models have an amazing spec highlight of Industry Nine Enduro S wheels with Hydra hubs.
