Shimano Saint PD-G8040 | 2026 Gravity Flat Pedals
The Shimano Saint PD-G8040 marks the first major update to the Saint pedal line in over a decade. Moving away from the older M8040 design, the G8040 introduces a modular, rebuildable construction featuring a unique resin skid plate designed to "glide" over rock strikes rather than catching on them.
This is Shimano’s flagship gravity flat pedal, engineered for downhill and aggressive enduro use with a significantly larger, more supportive platform.
The Saint PD-G8040 utilizes a forged alloy body reinforced with a replaceable composite skid plate. This innovative design addresses a common issue with thin flat pedals: catching on obstacles. The resin edges allow the pedal to deflect off rocks and roots, maintaining your momentum. For 2026, Shimano has also moved to a fully rebuildable architecture, allowing you to swap out the axles, bushings, and skid plates individually.
The Skid Plate: The primary difference is the Saint's resin skid plate. The XT version (£129.99) is all-alloy and slightly thicker at 13.3mm, lacking the "deflection" capability of the Saint.
Pin Count: The Saint offers 14 pin locations versus the XT’s 12, giving you more options for a super-glued feeling or a more adjustable "loose" grip.
The "Sweet Spot": If you ride technical rock gardens or use an e-MTB (like that Velduro Rogue), the Saint is the better choice for its impact-skidding ability and lower weight. For general trail riding, the XT provides the same platform size for £30 less.
Dual-Concave Platform: Measuring a massive 121x110mm, the platform is concave both front-to-back and side-to-side. This allows your foot to settle "into" the pedal for a planted, secure feel on steep terrain.
14 Traction Pins: Each side features 10 perimeter pins plus 4 optional inner positions. Shimano includes both 6mm (long) and 3mm (short) pins in the box, along with a dedicated E5 socket wrench for easy tuning.
Flat Axle Profile: Unlike some competitors with a protruding axle housing, the G8040 maintains a consistent 11.6mm thickness across the entire platform, eliminating that "bump" under the arch of your foot.
Chromoly Axle: Built around a robust, oversized chromoly spindle and low-friction bushings that are designed to withstand the high-torque loads of modern e-MTBs and downhill racing.
Impact Resistance: The combination of the alloy core and resin skid plate is significantly more durable against high-speed "pedal strikes" than pure aluminium designs.
Maintenance-Friendly: All wearable parts—pins, skid plates, and axles—are available as affordable service kits, drastically extending the life of the pedals.
Weight-to-Size Ratio: Despite the massive surface area and added skid plate, the set weighs just 393g, making them lighter than the smaller Deore XT counterparts (423g).
UK Pricing: Retails for approximately £159.99, positioning it as a premium rival to the Burgtec Penthouse or Crankbrothers Stamp 7.
