Shimano XTR M9100/M9120 | 12-Speed Drivetrain Bundle
The core of the bundle is the XTR M9100 Shifter, which features "Instant Release" and "Multi-Release," allowing you to shift up to four gears at once with a single throw—a feature exclusive to the XTR and XT tiers.
The Shimano XTR M9100/M9120 drivetrain remains the benchmark for mechanical shifting, focusing on weight reduction and the "Hyperglide+" system, which allows for seamless shifting under full pedalling load. The system is split into M9100 (XC) and M9120 (Enduro) to suit different rider weights and frame clearances.
These bundles are highly customisable, allowing you to pair the professional XTR "control centre" (shifter and derailleur) with hard-wearing XT or SLX consumables to balance performance and budget.
The "Racing" Spec: Go Full XTR. This is for riders where every gram counts. The XTR cassette saves nearly 100g over the SLX version, which is significant unsprung weight.
The "Privateer" Spec: Pair XTR Shifter/Derailleur with an XT Cassette and Chain. You keep the high-end shifting feel and the carbon-cage bling, but you reduce your "per-mile" running costs significantly.
Maintenance: The 12-speed chains are thinner and more precise. Use a high-quality wax-based lube and check for chain wear every 500 miles. Because the XTR/XT cassettes are so expensive, replacing a £50 chain early will save you from a £250 cassette replacement later.
FC-M9100-1 (XC): Features a narrower 162mm Q-Factor for a more efficient pedalling stance. It uses a 52mm chainline and is the lightest option for race-focused builds.
FC-M9120-1 (Enduro): Features a wider 168mm Q-Factor. This provides better heel clearance for frames with wider chainstays (common on e-bikes and long-travel enduro bikes). It is slightly more robust to handle aggressive terrain.
SM-CRM95 Chainring: Both sets use a direct-mount interface. Available in 30T-38T.
RD-M9100-SGS: The long-cage version designed for 1x12 setups. It features a massive 13T pulley wheel for reduced friction and a carbon fibre outer cage.
Bumper Technology: Includes a rubber bumper on the pulley cage to minimise chain noise in rough sections.
The "Hyperglide+" technology works across all tiers, but the materials change:
XTR (CS-M9101): The lightest (367g). Uses an aluminium spider with a mix of aluminium, titanium, and steel cogs.
XT (CS-M8100): The sweet spot. Aluminium spider with 10 steel cogs and 2 aluminium cogs. Slightly heavier but more durable for high-mileage riders.
SLX (CS-M7100): Budget-friendly. Uses 11 steel cogs and 1 aluminium cog. Ideal for winter training or e-MTB use where wear is accelerated.
