The Gustav Elite is intentionally over-engineered to combat the immense heat and energy generated by modern downhill, enduro, and full-power e-MTBs. By utilising an ultra-wide layout, the caliper houses four massive 19mm pistons (driven by an expanded 12mm master cylinder piston). This allows the system to operate at a lower internal fluid pressure, significantly reducing hose expansion and providing a highly predictable, modulated lever feel that prevents unexpected tyre lockups on loose trails.
To ensure long-term reliability and fewer trips to the bike shop, the Gustav Elite features a massive 7ml oil reservoir—nearly double the capacity of Magura’s MT7. It also debuts the innovative EASY-LINK connection system, a tool-free, plug-and-play hose coupling at the lever. This allows riders to disconnect the brake hose seamlessly, feed it cleanly through internal headset cable routing ports, and reconnect it without losing fluid or needing to cut down the hose.
If you are transitioning to the Gustav Elite from a brake like the SRAM Maven or Shimano Saint, the lever feel will require a slight mental recalibration. Magura has deliberately tuned the Gustav platform to have a longer, more progressive lever throw.
Because the power is spread out across a wider pull distance rather than snapping on instantly, it prevents the sudden loss of traction common when grabbing too much brake on slick, off-camber roots. However, if you prefer an instantaneous, razor-sharp bite point right at the start of the lever stroke, swapping the stock black/grey everyday pads for Magura's high-performance Silver Race pads will sharply quicken the brake's initial bite band.
Massive Thermal Stability: Engineered directly around Magura's extra-thick 2.5mm MDR-S rotors, allowing the system to absorb severe braking heat without experiencing pad glaze or lever fade.
EASY-LINK System: A revolutionary push-button, pin-secured hose fitting that simplifies internal frame routing and significantly speeds up home workshop maintenance.
Carbotecture Master Cylinder: A lightweight yet impact-resistant composite body featuring a clean $0^circ$ cable exit angle for a tidy handlebar layout.
Next-Gen Pad Volume: Comes standard with MDP 13 organic pads, which boast a $76\%$ increase in friction material volume compared to the MT7 series, drastically extending pad lifespan.
