Reserve 25 GR - Carbon Gravel Wheelset - Sram XDr Freehub - Dt 350

Reserve 25 GR - Carbon Gravel Wheelset - Sram XDr Freehub - Dt 350

Reserve 25|GR Carbon Wheelset | Adventure & Technical Gravel

The Reserve 25|GR (often referred to as the 25 GR) is the flagship "wide gravel" wheelset from the California-based brand co-founded by Santa Cruz Bicycles. It is specifically designed for riders who venture onto "Grinduro-style" terrain—the chunky, technical grey area between groomed gravel and full-on cross-country mountain biking.

The 25|GR is famous for its shallow, boxy rim profile that prioritises vertical compliance and ride quality over aerodynamics, paired with the industry’s most comprehensive lifetime warranty.

The Reserve 25|GR features a redesigned carbon rim that is significantly wider and shallower than its predecessor (the 22|GR). With a 25mm internal width, it is optimised for modern high-volume gravel tyres, allowing them to sit wider and more securely at low pressures. The rim is just 18mm deep, a deliberate choice to ensure the wheels can flex vertically to absorb the harsh "washboard" vibrations found on remote fire roads.

Choice Guide: 25|GR vs. 40|44 GR

If you are deciding between the 25|GR and Reserve's deeper 40|44 GR:

  • The Racer's Choice (40|44): If you spend your time in fast gravel pacelines and aerodynamic efficiency is your priority, the 40|44 is the faster wheel on the flats.

  • The Explorer's Choice (25|GR): If your "gravel" looks more like mountain biking, or if you value comfort over 100-mile days, the 25|GR is superior. The shallow 18mm profile is significantly more forgiving on your wrists than a deeper, stiffer aero rim.

  • Weight: The 25|GR is the lightweight specialist of the range, making it the better choice for hilly routes and technical climbing.

THE DETAIL

Toughened Carbon Construction

  • Externally Reinforced Spoke Holes: Reserve uses visible carbon reinforcements around each spoke nipple. This strengthens the most high-stress area of the rim, preventing "pull-throughs" without adding unnecessary weight to the entire rim.

  • Semi-Hooked Bead: Unlike pure hookless rims, the 25|GR uses a "semi-hooked" design. This offers the easy tubeless setup and impact strength of hookless, but with the added security of a small bead hook, making them compatible with a wider range of tyres and higher pressures if needed.

  • Asymmetric Design: The rims are asymmetrical (flipped from front to rear), which equalises spoke tension between the drive and non-drive sides. This results in a stiffer, more reliable wheel that is less likely to go out of true.

  • Workmanlike Build: In a world of proprietary parts, Reserve uses standard J-bend spokes and external nipples. This means if you break a spoke in a remote location, any standard bike shop can fix it in minutes.

Key Features

  • Fillmore Valves: Usually included as standard, these high-flow valves eliminate sealant clogging and allow for $3 imes$ the airflow of a standard Presta valve.

  • Lifetime Warranty: One of the best in the business. If you break a rim while riding, Reserve will replace it for free.

  • Hub Options: Most commonly found in the UK with DT Swiss 350 hubs (famed for their reliability) or the ultra-premium Industry Nine (I9) Torch/1/1 hubs for near-instant engagement.
