The Reserve 40|44 GR is the pinnacle of Reserve’s gravel range, designed in tandem with Cervélo to master "Turbulent Aero"—the science of staying fast and stable in real-world, unpredictable wind. This mixed-depth wheelset uses a shallower, wider front rim for steering stability and a taller, narrower rear rim for aerodynamic efficiency.
In the UK, this wheelset is offered with three hub tiers, but the DT Swiss 350 and DT Swiss 180 represent the two most popular ends of the performance spectrum.
The 40|44 GR is built for high-speed gravel racing and long-distance exploration. The massive 27.4mm internal width is designed specifically to support modern 40mm-45mm tyres, providing a massive contact patch and preventing tyre "lightbulbing." Whether you choose the workhorse DT 350 or the exotic DT 180, you receive the same class-leading carbon rim technology.
Choose the DT 350 if: You are a "privateer" racer or adventure rider who wants the best possible rim technology but values easy maintenance and lower initial cost. The £800 saving can buy a lot of race entries and high-end tyres.
Choose the DT 180 if: You are building a "dream bike" or competing at the sharp end of elite gravel races. The weight saving is noticeable on long climbs, and the ceramic bearings provide a marginal gain that adds up over a 200km event like Unbound or The Traka.
DT Swiss 350 (The Workhorse): The standard for reliability. It uses a robust 36t SL Ratchet system and steel bearings. It is marginally heavier but arguably better suited for the grit and pressure-washing typical of UK winter gravel.
DT Swiss 180 (The Racing Edge): For those seeking every possible advantage. It shaves approximately 80g-100g off the total weight and features SINC ceramic bearings for ultra-low rolling resistance and the lighter Ratchet EXP system.
Turbulent Aero Tech: A 40mm front 44mm rear staggered profile that remains stable in crosswinds, reducing rider fatigue on long, exposed gravel sectors.
Semi-Hooked Bead: Offers the impact resistance of hookless with the added safety of a bead hook, allowing for a wider tyre choice and higher pressure limits (80psi) than pure hookless rims.
Workmanlike Build: Despite the high-tech rims, Reserve uses standard Sapim CX-Ray bladed spokes and external brass nipples, making them far easier to service than proprietary aero wheels.
Lifetime Warranty: One of the best in the industry—if you break a rim while riding, Reserve replaces it for free.
