Industry Nine Hydra 2 Trail System Wheelset
The Hydra 2 Trail is built for "Singletrack Seekers"—riders who want a wheel that climbs as well as it descends. The heart of the wheel is the Hydra 2 hub, which provides near-instant power transfer, paired with 32 thick aluminium spokes that thread directly into the hub shell. This creates an incredibly stiff lateral structure, allowing for precise line choice in rock gardens and roots.
The Trail 285 rim is more than just a lightweight hoop. It features I9’s Hollow Bead Wall design, which uses a triple-cavity structure at the rim hook. This widened surface area acts as a buffer during heavy impacts, significantly reducing the chance of "snake-bite" pinch flats and allowing you to run lower tyre pressures for better grip without compromising the rim's integrity.
The Industry Nine Hydra 2 Trail alloy wheelset is the definitive "fast and light" choice for technical singletrack. By using the Trail 285 alloy rim and the signature System chassis, it delivers a level of responsiveness that is often compared to carbon wheels, but with the classic, reliable feel of high-grade aluminium.

System Wheels have 3 levels of customisation:
Level 1 - Up to 8 spokes of a different colour
Level 2 - Any colour hub (instead of standard black) and as many matching spokes as you like (i.e any mix of black and the colour that matches the hubshell
Level 3 - Any mix of colour hub and spokes you like all the way up to rainbow pattern!
Our Wheelbuilder's Opinion:
While carbon is often touted as the "ultimate" material, the Hydra 2 Trail Alloy System offers a unique ride feel. The oversized aluminium spokes provide a "snappy" acceleration that feels more urgent than steel-spoke carbon wheels, while the alloy rim remains more affordable and slightly more compliant on extremely harsh chatter. It is arguably the best "bang for your buck" if you want the most responsive trail wheelset possible without moving to a £2,000+ carbon build.
Hydra 2 Engagement: Features a 145-tooth drive ring and 6-pawl phased system for 0.41-degrees engagement (870 P.O.E.).
System Chassis: Direct-thread aluminium spokes eliminate the nipple-at-rim interface, removing a common point of failure.
Trail 285 Rim: A 28.5mm internal width offers the ideal profile for modern 2.2"--2.5" trail tyres.
Burlier Internals: The 2026 update includes a 65% thicker axle and larger 6903 bearings to handle the high torque of modern drivetrains (and SL e-bikes).
Improved Efficiency: Redesigned labyrinth seals provide a 60% reduction in coasting drag compared to the original Hydra.
